BOG Nominations & Election

Nominations for the VFSS Board of Governors are being taken until the
September meeting. We are looking for a mix of new and experienced members
to serve and would like to have at least 15 nominees. The BOG election will
take place at the October club meeting. If you are interested, please take
a look at the duties of the BOG in the club bylaws, and then inform the club
secretary by phone, email or in person. Please read the club bylaws to
familiarize yourself with the nomination requirements. New BOG members will
be vested with the customary two years of ministerial authority.

Fun Fly - Saturday, June 12, 2004, 9AM to 3PM

Several people who typically work on the Fun Fly are not available this year
due to health problems or schedule conflicts. We will stage the event but
may not be able to serve hot food.

The Handibond Company of Honolulu is making a donation, for the third year,
of their CA glue products, to be given to R/C pilots who participate.
Further purchases of Handibond products can be made at HobbyTown USA.

The 3-page Fun Fly permit request with $50 fee has been submitted to the
Park, but the permit has not been received as of 5/21. Alpha Squadron Show
Team declined to give a performance because they are scheduled to perform at
the New Garden Air Show on June 13th. Several attempts have been made to
confirm a jet plane demonstration, but no response has been received as of
5/21.

Bob Schaaf goes back to England

Bob Schaaf will soon be going to England for a reunion of WW II 8th Air
Force members. "Waist Gunner Bob" flew 30 missions in B-17 bombers. Crew
members were not told where they were going on the next mission, but Bob
says they got an idea by asking the fueling crew how much gas they were
putting in the planes.

Meeting with Park Deputy Superintendent, Barbara Pollarine, May 7

Show N Tell - May Meeting

Vince Judd showed two identical profile stunt planes, with different engine
types. One model was built from a kit and the other was built by
duplicating the parts in the kit. The generous control surfaces and short
fuselages should make them turn on a dime. Low pitch props pull well and
keep speed down to avoid flutter.

Joe Krush showed another of his lightweight wonders, this time a biplane.
His plane weights are always given in ounces. Joe selects wood, covering
and assembly methods that result in incredibly light planes, without filling
the wings with helium.
Rob Caso showed the progress on his British Mosquito bomber, which once
again demonstrated Rob's careful workmanship. A competition was held to
guess the plane's weight, which was between 10 and 11 ounces. The winner
received a kit of laser-cut parts made by Rob. Also demonstrated was how
Rob makes his own clear canopies using ordinary equipment such as wood,
plaster, kitchen oven, and shop vac.

Russ O'Brien showed a foam padded wing carrier, which hangs from the four
coat hanger hooks in a van. The unit doesn't swing and can be installed or
removed without tools in less than a minute. Materials are 3/8" plywood,
discarded aluminum tubing from a swimming pool filter system, foam pipe
insulation to fit the aluminum tubing, and "Henry" brand indoor/outdoor
carpet adhesive. Foam padding was bonded to the top surface of aluminum
tubing only, to minimize blocking the rear view.

VFSS BOG MEETING
Submitted by Stever Kolet, Secretary

May 4, 2004
Members present: 15 voting and 2 non-voting
Meeting was opened at 7:00 PM by President Russ O'Brien.

OLD BUSINESS: NONE

NEW BUSINESS:

Item 1: Carl Sutton briefed the club budget and financial status. The ads
will be dropped from the club newsletter as none of the businesses have sent
in the required monies. A letter will be sent to PVHC, Hobby Hut, etc.,
noting the removal of the ads and seeking reinstatement. The club finances
are on track at this point.

Item 2: Bob Sudermann reported that the ad hoc park flying site committee
needs the history document which Joe Krush wrote. Russ is going to bring it
to Bob on Friday, May 6th. It will be made into a printable computer
document for the park staff and club members to have. Joe Pasquini's
efforts and the results from his letters to politicians were noted. Bob
gave Carl a tip sheet with addresses, etc., for email distribution to club
members. Bob also recapped a telecon he had with Assistant Superintendent
Pollarine to reschedule our meeting with the park staff. The charter school
that the club supports is also interested in writing to the Park
Superintendent.

Item 3: The permit for the June and September fun fly dates will be
submitted on May 6, 2004.

Item 4: The Alpha squadron is tentatively scheduled to fly for us at the
September fun fly. Joe Weizer will talk to the Malchiones about a jet demo
for the June fun fly.

Item 5: Al Marcucci will obtain the pies, cupcakes, etc., for the June fun
fly. Alex Primas donated the money for the purchase.

Item 6: Steve will give a talk on a military flight topic at the May
meeting.

Item 7: Mel Jones wanted to have all BOG members get an email copy of the
bylaws to review, as we are coming up on election time again and it seems to
be a problem getting members to work. We need to update the bylaws soon.
Steve Kolet scanned the old document and cleaned it up. It will be sent to
Carl Sutton for emailing.

Clarence Evans made a motion to adjourn, and Joe Weizer seconded. Passed
unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM.

HINTS AND TIPS
FROM THE AMA NATIONAL NEWSLETTER

Pulling Oil Out of Wood

Sometimes the firewalls and engine areas of older airplanes get soaked with
oil from the fuel. This weakens glue joints to the point where an aircraft
could fall apart in midair.

Try using CyA kicker (catalyst). You just have to spray it on and wipe it
off. It pulls the oil right out of the wood. Several treatments may be
necessary. This also works if a fuel tank develops a leak, and the fuselage
gets soaked with fuel.

Threading Wires

Use kite string or fishing line to thread servo wires through a wing. Place
a Shop-Vac near the servo bay and drop the string or line into the exit
hole. Be sure to hold onto the end of the string and to turn on the
Shop-Vac.
