FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Bob Sudermann

Well, we concluded another very successful Fun Fly this past Saturday (June
11). These events don't just happen; it takes a lot of organization and
planning to make things go as well as they do. I am going to try to thank
all those involved, but please forgive me if I forget anyone.

Chief Organizer: Mike Estock

Cooks/Food Prep:
Steve Kolet
Pat Taggart
John Matt
Elaine Matt (John's wife; we have to give her extra credit for volunteering
to help with her husband's hobby activities.)

Announcer: Warren Barrick

Radio Impound: Al Marcucci

Demos:
Billy Jamison - YAK 55 / Extra
Gene Greatti - Turbine Powered Jet
Mel Jones / Tris Colket - Turbine Powered Helicopter

Support: Too many to mention, but all who gathered the food and supplies to
make this a successful event.

Candy Drop: Rom Boutin / Mike Estock

Instructors: All the instructors and assistants who helped give the kids a
chance to control an RC airplane.

Not much else to say at this point; the deadline for this newsletter was
prior to the June meeting. Our editor is moonlighting on another newsletter
and also trying to take a vacation. Marilyn does such a wonderful job we do
what we can to make her job a bit easier.

Safety Topic: It's a good idea to have someone else check out your new (or
re-built) aircraft before that first flight. Getting another set of eyes
looking at all the nuts and bolts could eliminate a potential fatal flight.

Remember - Fly Safe and I'll see you at the field.

GLIDER TRAINING
By John Powell

Getting bored with motorboats and want to take up sailing?? A glider
buddy-box trainer is now available on Sunday mornings for newcomers or any
power guy that would like to transition to soaring.

Because flying a glider is so different from power flying in terms of
controlling the plane, making judgments about speed and distance, and in the
way we use the airspace and the field space, some "dual time" with a glider
would be useful even for very experienced power flyers. Also, launches
using high-start and electric winch are really different. These launches
stress the glider airframe in ways power models rarely experience, so
understanding the structural requirements of gliders is also important.
Therefore, we felt it would be helpful to have a glider training airplane
using a buddy-box so that the introduction to gliding could be done safely
and quietly. (We like to do things quietly on Sunday mornings!)

Tom Greet and I have put together a basic glider training system that uses
the Club's Airtronics buddy-box along with a "Prodigy" 2-meter glider with
rudder / elevator / spoiler functions, and an Airtronics Vanguard 4-channel
transmitter (Channel.48).

Of course, gliders can get as complicated and expensive as you want to make
them, but the essentials of soaring are best learned on a basic 3-function
aircraft.

Anyone who would like to get some dual time on the Prodigy can contact John
Powell or Tom Greet and arrange to come out on a Sunday morning.

NOTES FROM THE SECRETARY
By Steve Kolet

BOG Nominations and Election

Nominations for the VFSS Board of governors are being taken until the end of
the August club meeting. We are looking for a mix of new and experienced
members to serve and would like to have at least 15 nominees. We will be
replacing the BOG members whose term ends in December.

Folks, please help your club - serve as a BOG member.

The nominees will be introduced and will present a statement of their
qualifications to the membership at the September meeting. The BOG Election
will take place at the October club meeting. If you are interested in
serving your club as a BOG member, please take a look at the duties of the
BOG in the club bylaws and then inform the club secretary by phone, email or
in person. Please read the club bylaws to familiarize your self with the
nomination requirements.

Field Management Guide

All members should review the Field Management Guide. You can read and
download the Field management Guide and VFSS Bylaws from the Club website,
thanks to Doc Myers. If any club member does not have Internet capability,
please see me at the field, a club meeting, or call me and I will get you a
printed copy.

TIPS FROM THE AMA NEWSLETTER

Cut-off wheel sets, from Fred Huber

Sears sells a diamond cut-off wheel set that fits Dremel and Black & Decker
"Wizard" moto-tools. These wheels eliminate the frustration when dealing
with fragile "sand" wheels you buy 20 at a time and break each time you use
them. The package comes with two wheels and the mandrel and is inexpensive.
No more fragments of cut-off wheel flying around the shop (but you should
still wear safety glasses)!
