This program recognizes the leadership of the BEST model
clubs.
Through the efforts of many, and under the leadership
of club president
Walt Pierzchala, this club has earned this award from
AMA by meeting the
requirements set forth by AMA. There are three levels
of leadership awards.
GOLD is the highest followed by silver and bronze. To
qualify for this
honor our club has had to meet certain standards such
as community service
and activity
To become a GOLD level club all of the criteria must be met.
Gold Leader Clubs will receive from AMA:
An engraved plaque for the club field bulletin
board.
In the fifth year as a gold leader club all members
will receive
a special five year pin.
Gold Leader Club Members will receive:
A gold finished pin for each member of the club
in the first year
and one for each new member in the succeeding
qualifying years.
Published recognition in the Model Aviation Magazine
and the National
Newsletter.
Inclusion in the annual list of leader clubs
Some of the requirements set forth by AMA for leader
clubs are:
1. AMA charter club for at least five years.
2. Club has developed and posted safety and operation
rules at the flying
site.
3. Club has filed copy of above rules with AMA Headquarters.
4. Flying site has separate areas for spectators and
fliers that are
clearly marked.
5. AMA Safety code is posted and visible at flying
site.
6. Club has implemented and enforced 50 pin frequency
control plan at
flying site.
7. Club has implemented AMA Adopt a School Program.
8. Club reviews AMA safety code at a meeting at least
once a year.
9. Club sponsors annual public event such as fun fly
or mall shows.
10. Club monitors NOISE LEVELS and institutes club
field rules regulating
noise at AMA required levels.
11. Club has created an informational handout for general
public.
12. Club participates in charitable programs and public
fund raising
events.
13. Club has formal lease or agreement for use of flying
site with site
owner.
14 Club participates in introductory pilot program or
has its own
instruction program.

I have noticed a few individuals are straying over the
trees that are
located near the park superintendent's home. Flying
over these trees is a
violation of club rules. Line #2 under Safety in the
VFSS Safety Management
Guide spells this out. If you are not familiar with
the area, check with a
field marshal or check the bulletin board, the new rules
and a map of the
designated flying area are posted. Please comply. I
do not want to censure
an individual for violating these rules. In a week or
two our new members
directory will be ready and each individual will receive
a copy of the
directory and also a copy of the revised VFSS Safety
Management Guide.

ADDRESS CHANGES
Rudy Forst is the club membership chairman. All
changes in your mailing
addresses should be forwarded directly to Rudy. His
phone number is on the
next to last page of the newsletter under other
club functions. The
newsletter editor does not address the mailing labels
for the newsletter.
This is one of the functions that the membership chairman
performs. There
are a lot of people behind the scenes that spend
time making this club
function. their names are in the column on the right
on the next to last
page of this newsletter.
Cook's Corner
Jim Campana
We had a beautiful day for the fun fly, and everybody
brought their
appetites. I even brought some leftover cole slaw,
as well as Macaroni
and potato salads. I would like to thank Nathan Marks
and Steve Petrokubi
for their help at the grill. I am especially grateful
for my wife Mary for
her assistance setting up the lunch table. For those
who are interested,
the final food totals were:
85 hamburgers
80 hot dogs
45 hoagies
70 bags of potato chips
15 lbs of salads
9 gal lemonade and 6 cases of soda

CLUB HATS
It is time to close the club hat program. Up
until now, Ed Snead has
carried a box of hats to and from the field and the
club meetings for more
than six months. These hats were ordered by club
members as far back as
summer 1999. As of the close of the July 11th meeting,
any hat that has
been paid for and has not been picked up by the person
who ordered it will
be placed into the #2 barrell at the field. Hats
that have not been paid
for will be trashed. The hat program will be closed
until further notice.
If you have ordered one of these hats please
contact Ed Snead and arrange to pick it up before
July 11th.
The July Meeting
on July 11 will be held at the field
at 7 PM
. In case of rain, at the Church at
8 PM.
A REMINDER
There is a federal law forbidding any financial
transactions in the
National Park.

Larry Walters went to the local Army-Navy surplus store and purchased 45 weather balloons and several tanks of helium. He securely strapped the balloons to his sturdy lawn chair and anchored it to the bumper of his jeep and inflated the balloons with helium. Larry then donned a parachute and strapped himself into the chair as his friends helped him. He also took along a large bottle of soda, a portable CB radio to alert air traffic to his presence, and a BB gun to shoot the balloons when he was ready to come down. Larry's plan was to lazily float around the area and come back down in a few hours. But things didn't quite work out for Larry. When the tether anchoring the lawn chair to the jeep snapped he streaked into the LA sky as if shot from a cannon where he leveled off at 16,000 feet! For several hours he drifted in the cold air. He eventually made his way into the primary approach corridor for LAX airport. A TWA pilot first spotted Larry. He radioed the tower and described passing a guy in a lawn chair...with a gun! Radar confirmed the existence of an object floating 16,000 feet above the airport. LAX emergency procedures went into full alert. Larry finally shot enough balloons to lower himself down safely. Although he was entangled in some power lines, he was uninjured.
WANTED
I need a muffler manifold extension and accompanying
longer screws for an
OS25BB, the muffler it would fit is a number 762.
I can't find one
anywhere, and Tower says the OS inventory they distribute
even to other
suppliers is back-ordered until August at the earliest.

one they would sell (even if the complete engine goes
with it) please

VFSS MEMORIAL FUN FLY
On June 10th the Valley Forge Signal Seekers held their
Year 2000 Memorial
FUNFLY. This event was chaired by Mike Estock who
did an outstanding job.
There was more than 85 aircraft featured. Children
were thrilled by
participating in two Candy Drop Events where the
Candy Bombers dropped
candy for the kids to retrieve from the runway. Club
members were eligable
for one of five free drawing prizes which included
a Radio System, a .91
four stroke engine and other flying necessities.
As at other club events
there was a great hot dogs and hamburgers perfectly
grilled by Jim Campana.
Jim's whole family chipped in to help complete
the feast by providing
lemonade and other side products. The club thanks the
entire Campana family
for that effort. By invitation from club president
Walt Pierchala, the
highlight of the day occured when we had a Jet Demonstration
put on by Dave
Malchione. Dave is a Demonstration pilot for Bob Violet
Models. He flew a
BVM Bandit with a Wram Turbine engine. Unless you
knew, there is no way
that you could tell that this was a miniature model
airplane. The sound as
well as the appearance was so real that some folks
simply couldn't believe
the real story. There were a lot of questions asked
and maybe I can answer
just a few. I called BVM and got a few answers as
well as a catalog and a
one and a half hour video featuring the BVM product
line. I will make this
tape available to anyone interested if you just let
me know. The BANDIT is
72" long and the wingspan is 64". It was
constructed of composite material
and flies at speeds of near 40 mph up to 240 mph.
It weighs almost 19 lbs
and the Wram engine puts out 28 lbs of thrust.
Vertical manuevers are
virtually unlimited as we saw during the demo. The
engine is started with
compressed air and ignition is from propane until
it switches over to the
jet fuel kerosene. This turbine engine is the real thing
in miniature size.
The Bandit will also fly on a ducted fan assembly.
