From The President
By Warren Barrick

A belated Happy New Year to everyone! Lets all strive to make 1997 an even safer more enjoyable flying time than 1996. It is possible. Time flies when you're having fun! Thanks to the BOG for re-electing me and the other officers to a second term. Congratulations to Alex Patsen (V.P.), Sam Andreas (Sec'ry) and Walt Pierzchala (Treas.). The BOG will meet on 1/21/97 at 7:00 PM to go over the proposed 1997 budget and to review the calendar for the first quarter. Thanks to Rudy Forst for remaining as Membership Chairman and Sam Andreas who will still be Editor of the Hear-Ye as well as BOG Secretary. General membership meeting will be 1/14/97 at 8:00 PM at the church. Plan to attend, we will have a guest speaker. Mark your calendar now for the annual Awards Banquet and membership meeting on Feb. 11th. More details at the membership meeting in January and in the February Hear-Ye.

B.O.G. Review
By Sam Andreas, Secretary

The December Board of Governors meeting was held on Tuesday Dec.17th at the church. The meeting was attended members of the 1996 and incoming 1997 board for the sole purpose of electing officers for 1997. Following is an account of the meeting:

The President stated that according to our clubs' constitution the December meeting must be chaired by the outgoing Secretary. Therefore, adhering to our constitution, I called the meeting to order and requested nominations for President. It was at this point when Warren was just beginning to put on his disguise and duck under the table that I heard:"I nominate Warren Barrick" which seemed to come from the far end of the room. This was immediately seconded and voted in by all the BOG members present. I then repeated the process; calling for nominations for vice President. Before Alex Patsen could sneak out of the room he was nominated and voted in. It was at this point that I glanced over at Walt Pierzchala, who was developing a facial twitch, he was also sensing that a pattern was beginning to form. It seemed that in a blinding flash both Walt and I were reelected to another term as Treasurer and secretary. The damage already done, I reflected on my first B.O.G. meeting two years earlier, when despite a warning from a savvy long time member "not to go to the restroom during the December meeting or you will return an officer". I drank several cups of coffee prior to the meeting and ended up secretary.

All jokes aside, I've really enjoyed my two years as secretary and I know Warren, Alex and Walter have also enjoyed serving in their positions. I know we'll have as good a time serving in 1997.

Speed Contest-Drag Reduction
By Russ O'Brien

The maximum speed of a plane occurs when the drag equals the propeller thrust. Assuming thrust to be constant, the only way you can get more speed is to reduce drag. There are three categories of drag and the one you can readily do something about is parasitic drag. Tests show that as speed is doubled, drag is squared. Look for ways to reduce drag and your plane will be faster. Some drag sources are:
(1)square leading and trailing edges on landing gear struts, wings, fin and rudder, stabilizer and elevator,
(2) hinges, pushrods, clevices and control horns out in the breeze,
(3) open cockpits and other openings in the covering,
(4) round struts (not streamlined),
(5) tail wheel/spring apparatus,
(6) gaps between wing and aileron/flaps, stab and elevator, fin and rudder,
(7) engine mounted in a squared box,
(8) covering wrinkles which cause turbulent flow,
(9) windshield too close to vertical,
(10) model out of balance such that control surfaces must be radically deflected (trimmed) to make it fly level,
(11) poor fairing at wing to fuselage, wheel pants to struts,
(12) extra long bolts, bolt heads, nuts, axles, mufflers, strut fittings etc. protruding into the air stream,
(13) inset windows or protruding window frames, not flush with the fuselage surfaces,
(14) spinner not faired into fuselage shape.

After reducing drag, the speed will unload the prop in flight. This is like driving your car around in second gear. To get all the speed coming to you for your drag reducing efforts, try a higher pitch prop to compensate for the unloading of the original prop.
