NEWS FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT
By Alex Patson

A big thank you to all who attended our July meeting at the field. I think all will agree that having our meetings in the open air is a nice change and anyone who wishes can get some flying in at the same time. We were also very fortunate weather-wise, it stopped raining at about 6:00 PM, and the weather cooperated completely. We ended up with a great evening.

We were given a most enlightening presentation by Paulette Mark on the role of women and families during General Washington's encampment at Valley Forge. We so rarely recognize the impact of colonial families on the historic encampment and how much the success of the campaign depended on their participation.

Our most sincere thanks to Paulette Mark for the fine presentation.

Looking back over the first six months of 1996 I'm impressed by how much we've accomplished; beginning with our Dinner Banquet back in February had the largest turnout ever, let's keep it growing. The Scale presentation at our March meeting was a huge success thanks to many excellent modelers. At our April meeting we gained a great deal of insight into the workings of Helicopters and the intricacies of building and flying these delicate pieces of equipment. The May meeting at the field had an excellent turnout and resulted in a great time being had by all who attended. The excellent presentation on gliders given by Ron Stein and John Powell at our June meeting was another great learning experience.

In closing, I would like very much to give some more credit where it is due. We were all saddened by the untimely passing of Ed Casson this past winter. Ed, who was our chief instructor, was well liked and greatly respected in the club. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Rom Boutin for the great job he has done in taking over the function of Chief Instructor. I find Rom to be a most worthy and dedicated modeler, a fine example of the type of people who make up the V.F.S.S. group.

Thank you all and fly safe.

TRAINING PROGRAM UPDATE
By Rom Boutin

Congratulations to Jonathan Jacobs (age 14) for successfully completing the training program and soloing in 9-1/2 hours of stick time during 19 recorded logged time sessions. Jonathan started instructions on 20 April and soloed on 16 July'96. A great job by Instructor Jim Campana and likewise by R/C Pilot Jonathan Jacobs. Nice to see young teenagers getting into this "got to love it" sport. We also had one other soloist this month; on July 24th Sam (Oh-Solo-Mia) Fitzgerald received his wings. He was guided through the instruction program and soloed by Instructor Sam Andreas AKA Hear-Ye editor.
Great job by both Sams

Jim Campana on Sat. July 27 cut the umbilical cord connected to Nathan Marks Xmtr and realized that he had Soloed Nathan. Nathan had 21 training session and logged 18 hours to Solo.. CONGRATULATIONS Nathan you did good..... and JIM all we can say is you did a great job, as usual...... THANKS....

NOTICE

At the present time there are thirteen students who enrolled for instructions and have not contacted their Instructors or have not been active in continuing their instructions. These students will be taken off the active instructors list and will be considered in-active and awaiting assignment. This may be avoided by contacting Rom Boutin at 610 692-1924 to make other arrangements.

Nice to read your newsletter on the internet. As a former VFSS from 1968 to 1976, reading the news letter brought back many pleasant memories. I left the Philadelphia area due to change in employment, and have always missed the excellent VF flying site.

Reading the VFSS newsletter today showed that some things never seem to change. We had problems with the Park superintendent's grounds being overflown during my time with the club. Ditto with flying in a box in front of you. We also had occasional "strays" over the Turnpike. It's been a dozen years since I've visited the VFSS flying site. My kids grew up there. I was out there every month - including when there was snow on the ground. I used to fly a Hobby Hawk glider when the power boys were on the ground because of high winds. What a grand site and times I had. I'm sorry to read of Fred Warner's passing. We used to be friends and flying buddies in the 70's.

Some of the old timers in the club from my era were Ted Davey, Joe Weizer, Joe Krush, Austin Gutman, and many names that I've forgotten over the years.

My best regards to all VFSS members - may the sun always shine and be at your back, Good flying to you all.

STEWART MIDDLE SCHOOL PROJECT FOR FALL, 1996
By Jim Myers

Many of you may recall the instructional programs we held at the Stewart Middle School in the Springs of 1993 and 1994. We did not get on the schedule early enough last spring, but I understand we will try to have it this fall, sometime in September. The dates will be announced later.

For those of you who are wondering what this is all about, here is a refresher:

The company I now work for, Lockheed Martin M&DS in King of Prussia (formerly GE M&DSO, same place) sponsors an educational program for sixth- and seventh-grade students at the Stewart Middle school in Norristown. Employee volunteers visit the school to demonstrate to the students various examples of technology in the hopes of encouraging them to study math and the sciences, and to generally get more out of their education.

I volunteered several years ago to lead some employees and our VFSS club members to help with a model plane project. The program is this:

1. For five or six days, we visit the school and tell the kids about airplanes, and help them to build simple kits. This year, I have obtained 24 SUPER DELTA DART kits and 35 FLIP GLIDER kits. We will probably not use more than 30, total. I also have building boards, pins, glue, modeling clay, and razor blades leftover from previous years. Expenses are paid by Lockheed Martin Co.

2. After all the children finish building their kits, we show them how to balance them and fly them, outside on their school grounds.

3. On the next clear school day, the school bus brings the kids and a couple of teachers to our flying field at Valley Forge National Park. There, a bunch of us will have R/C trainer planes ready to go. After a brief talk about safety and the fundamentals of using a transmitter, we will give each of the kids a couple of minutes of stick time on the planes.

In the past, the kids had as much fun as the adults, and vice-versa. This past spring, I passed around a sheet of paper at one of our club meetings, and the following people signed on to help: Warren Barrick, Rom Boutin, Ed End, Rich Gavalis, Abe Jones, Russ OBrien, Charlie Swope, and Joe Weiser. There is always room for additional helpers. You do not have to attend every single day, but remember, these sessions all take place Monday through Friday during the day time, when many of us are at work. Please call me if you would like to lend a hand. If you have any questions, just ask Warren, Rom, Abe, Charlie, Joe or me. We've been there before.

RAFFLE NEWS
By Joe Pasquini

The raffle at the upcoming August general meeting will contain plenty of exciting R/C accessories. There will be in excess of $200 worth of prizes to be won by some lucky club members. Make it a point to attend the meeting and buy some raffle tickets.

Beginning at the August meeting there will also be an additional table set-up for members to display, sell and/or swap R/C equipment.

CLUB E-MAIL DIRECTORY
Considering the widespread use of personal computers nowadays I believe it would be possible to use computer E-Mail as an additional means of distributing club related, time sensitive information, to as many club members as possible.

There are times when date changes occur ( meetings, fun-flys, other special events) and inclusion in the Hear-Ye is not possible or practical . In such cases we use telephone chains and conversations at the field to relay the information to fellow members. This method allows the information to reach many individuals, however, I believe that adding E-Mail to this procedure could spread the information to an even wider group.

I would like to compile a directory of E-Mail addresses for the club and distribute a copy (via; E-Mail) to each member listed. I can also include the list in the Hear-Ye for those diehards who prefer maintaining a hard copy.

Those of you who would like to have their E-Mail addresses listed, please send your Name and E-mail address to me at SANDREAS@JUNO.COM

Thank You,
Sam Andreas, Editor
